1) You feel tired all the time
You just can’t shake this feeling of tiredness, even after the rare night when you do feel like you have had enough sleep.
The heavy feeling of exhaustion weighs you down as you go about each day, yet still you plaster your smile on, drink your coffee & get on with it - after all, if you don’t keep holding everything together, who will?!
2) You keep snapping at people or bursting into tears at the drop of a hat
You can’t understand why other people move so slowly & insist on getting in your way, when you have a million & one things to do.
Nobody seems to do anything right so you end up just doing everything yourself, and if anyone dares get on your wrong side they are going to feel your wrath.
Then when you finally reach the privacy of your own home or eventually break for a cup of tea, you find yourself crying like a baby because you forgot to put the teabag in & have the misfortune of experiencing the mixture of plain hot water with milk.
You speak the only words of comfort you know -
‘What is wrong with you ffs?
- Pull yourself together!’
3) You want the world to stop so you can get off!
Some days adulting just feels too much!
You want dig a hole to hide in & hope nobody notices your disappearance.
You dread leaving the house, opening your laptop or making those phone calls.
You dread coming face to face with another human being, because that means you may have to smile, or worse still verbally communicate - & the truth is, you have nothing left to give.
You fantasise about winning the lottery & living out your days on a tropical beach.
You just don’t want to be you anymore, you don’t want your life anymore - not even the good bits - It’s not that you want to die, you just want it all to stop.
...& how can you even think like this when you have all that you have?
Now the guilt kicks in at those defeatist thoughts & you feel even worse than you did before.
… Well let me tell you now, you are not alone in thinking these thoughts or feeling these feelings.
In fact, I would hazard a guess that they are some of the most common thoughts in the modern western world given that 74% of people in the latest government poll* reported feeling so overwhelmed or stressed that they couldn’t cope - & that is only the folks filling in the questionnaires!
So what can you do when it you are feeling this level of stress?
It’s simple when you think about it, the answer lies within the feelings
Take a break!
I know that seems like the most ridiculous of suggestions as you know full well that if you stop, everything will fall apart…
Or will it?
Will it really?
What is the worst that could happen?
Will the world stop turning, just because you take the break your body & mind so desperately need?
Just like a baby crying for food, your body is screaming these signals at you because it needs you to listen & take action.
Your body is like a toddler, it tells you exactly what it needs, when it needs it.
Your job is to listen carefully & discern between what it really needs & what are simply cravings for things that are not good for you.
For example you may think your body needs coffee. It makes sense, you are knackered & coffee perks you up for a while so you can get on with things.
But what your body is really trying to tell you is that it’s tired & it needs rest!
Your body is a miracle of engineering.
It is self healing, self cleaning & with the right fuel, self sufficient.
Your body needs very simple things to function properly:
Quality Sleep, rest, exercise & nutrition.
That is all! It really is that simple. You get what you put in…
Give it what it needs & it will give you energy to do all the things you want to do.
Abuse it with stimulants, lack of sufficient rest, poor sleep & junk food & you’ve guessed it, you will feel shitty.
Add stress hormones into the mix - which can be triggered by anything from the morning alarm going off, to a queue at the post office (at best!) & you have a recipe for a whole Myriad of stress related conditions.
Even the fittest, of gym bunnies can have a heart attack due to stress alone.
So if you are wondering what your body is trying to tell you, all you have to do is to pause long enough to listen effectively…
Pause for a moment,
Breathe long, slow deep, gentle breaths.
Feel into your body…
If pausing makes you fall asleep, that is what your body needs in that moment.
If pausing makes you emotional - feel into those feelings, what message do they have for you?
Take the time to ask your body what it really needs & it will tell you, then all you have to do is act upon it.
But you can’t do this if you don’t prioritise your health, if you are too busy ignoring the signs, running round at 50 MPH doing everything for everyone & trying to be all things to all people.
If you don’t pause, listen & take the appropriate action for self-preservation, your body will scream even more loudly - in the form of physical pain, serious illness or breakdown - & the louder it screams, the longer the recovery & the more time out of your life you need, so please heed my words, listen NOW & save yourself from a whole load of unnecessary suffering.
You’ve got this :)
